The Basa Project

The Basa Project, our most ambitious to date, is an integrated plan focusing on three wards of a remote subsistance-farming area in the Solu-Khumbu Disrict. Basa is a single Village Development Community (VDC) of approximately 5,000 Rai, Dalit and Chetri people.

As in much of rural Nepal, this area suffers extreme poverty; inaccessible health care; lack of electricity, roads and communication; unsanitary drinking water; illiteracy; a caste system; and until very recently has been subject to the rule of a monarch.

The Nepal Foundation Board members have some experience with the people, the schools, and past projects in this region. The goal of the Basa Project is to meet with the local people, who collectively establish their priorities, and to work cooperatively to address them. The Project has begun with Wards 7, 8 and 9--about 350 families--a manageable beginning for what it is hoped will become a model for other communities.

The Project team includes people with experience in addressing the needs faced in Basa. The Nepal Foundation has also contacted other NGOs and groups who are active or interested in related goals and projects in the region. Several groups in this international mix have agreed to share expertise and resources. Ideally, this will provide a model for cooperation, avoid wasteful duplication of resources and lend stability to the Project. The common goal is to help develop a stronger, healthier and self-sufficient community.

A vital link in The Basa Project is the Project Manager, Yadav Rai. A young man from the Basa region, he is well-known, dedicated and highly respected. Some of our Board Members have known him for several years. He has worked with The Foundation and other groups on previous projects aimed at improving schools and infrastructure. With a Masters Degree in English from Tribuvan University in Kathmandu and his personal connection to the community, he is eager to continue his active role in village projects.

With your interest and support this project will succeed and will offer a model for other communities in Nepal.
