Artist-in-residence program

The Nepal Foundation

A year-long program is designed for Nepali artists who wish to develop their creative and artistic talents in an unstructured setting, at our Hawaii location. Artists chosen to participate must have a clear personal goal to develop their artistic talents. It is hoped that at least one Nepali artist per year will be accepted. Living and transportation expenses are funded by the Nepal Foundation.

The program includes a stay at a residence on the Big Island of Hawaii in a site conducive to reflection and creativity. The unique residence is reminiscent of a Nepali temple complex, with over 30 woodcarvings.  Artists are able to work in their own studio, surrounded by Nepali art. The advantage of being removed from responsibilities in Nepal allows total focus on the artist's projects.

The program includes opportunities for sightseeing, interacting with American neighbors, and artists, learning about the American way of life. Special emphasis is placed on learning how democracy works in the US.

The Artist-in-Residence program is modeled after a similar and highly successful program in Ireland for US artists. The Nepali artists accepted into the program are expected to practice their skills and develop their talents through independent study which may include work on a thesis for educational credit. As appropriate and possible, informal concerts / exhibits of their work will be arranged.
